The filter's job is to keep particles and pollution out of your air-conditioner, and hence out of the air you breath. Once the filter gets clogged, it makes your system work harder to cool or heat your home and the last thing you want is increased energy bills and your air-conditioner to break down on the hottest day of summer or coldest day of winter (and you not be able to get a technician out for at least 3 weeks).
