Sydney's urban fabric extends right to the beach. The architecture needed to reflect this: it had to be a beach house, with a sense of place and belonging next to the coast. The brief was a relaxed beach house, with materials that weathered and could take the punishment of living near the coast. Sand is a constant companion.
An apparently small single storey house (as read from the street) that unfolds into a 3 level family home. This house is constructed on a tight site in the inner city. One of the biggest challenges was getting quality light and cross ventilation on what was to be a partially subterranean basement level.
Nestled in the tea-tree covered sand dunes of Victoria's remote ship-wreck coast, it responds to privacy and views using 'outdoor rooms' with partial walls to selectively include desirable aspects and exclude others, such as prevailing winds. It is an example of how form and function can meet to provide an environment that is both private and uplifting to live in.
Nestled among the tea-trees to take advantage of open bay views, this house is split into 2 living zones - the PM 'after-dark' and the AM 'daylight' zone. The idea of 'public and private' division of spaces drives the form of this project, manifesting in a 2-part form when read externally. Less than 50m from the water, this house is also oriented around the competing interests of solar access on one side and the ocean views on the other.
Our brief required us to re-create an institution, a democratic venue of the highest quality and customer focus. The antithesis of a 'fitout' we used architectural rather than decorative devices to create the environment. There is very restrained use of materials and devices. The interior spaces are finished in timber, hand made tiles, terrazzo, aged brass and vintage looking tobacco tanned leather.
