A coastal retreat on the Mornington Peninsula National Park, this house is a study in the contrasting qualities of concrete and timber. The house sits within the highly protected coastal landscape overlooking Bass Strait, and is subject to the extremes of southerly wind and rain, and bushfire. The house responds to the site by forming a sheltered courtyard space on the north side, and an elevated form pointed directly at the ocean view.
This is a small, simple house located in inner city Melbourne for an art collecting couple. The house belongs to the courtyard type where the building engages substantially with the boundaries of the site to create several courtyards. Through its planning, the house offers privacy, introspection and security.
This house, located on a small block in South Melbourne measuring 3.8 m x 25 m, is a further response to our investigations in questions of urban density and the concept of 'existenz minimum' or the minimum spatial requirements necessary for a small family to live comfortably within a compact single house in the inner city.
This project consists of an extensive restoration and additions to a Hawthorn brick double-fronted Victorian house. It accommodates additional kitchen/living spaces as well as a study/home office for a couple and their son. Key to this project is the study space designed to fulfill the requirements of the client for an inspirational, private and almost secretive space within which to write, think, create and make films.
The dialogue between architecture and nature has been a key interest of our practice since its inception. We place as much importance on the creation of outdoor rooms as we do indoor rooms, and believe each has much to offer to and inform the other. We believe in the simple, sensitive integration of plants with built form to be an essential ingredient to the success of 'place making'.
