The site for the house is in the Margaret River wine-growing region of Western Australia. It is bordered by the untouched bush land of the Pt. Leeuwin - Naturaliste National Park which in turn fronts the Indian Ocean. At the base of the site the Boodjidup Brook flows past towards the Indian Ocean. The clients functional brief was for a house with a single bedroom, a study and a detached below ground wine cellar.
In addition they required a separate self-contained studio for guests and extended family, a carport for two cars and a water tank. Their philosophical brief was for an architecture that intrigues, one that while encouraging contemplation will invite enjoyment rather than demanding understanding. The building was to engage the site and to provide both internal and external spaces that have a variety of light, scale and texture.

Services
The site is in a typical suburban subdivision, sloping two metres from the southern street boundary to the right of way at the rear of the property. The brief was to provide two residences on the site; one for the client and the visiting families of their children, the other a small flat for the clients mother; the visual privacy between these residences was to be maintained.
