The region is then divided into areas which are referred to as the Upper North Shore and the Lower North Shore.

The Lower North Shore includes the suburbs in close proximity to the Sydney Harbour, such as Neutral Bay, Waverton, Mosman, Cremorne, Lavender Bay, Milsons Point, Cammeray and North Sydney. The Lower North Shore is where many well-known parks, reserves and sports grounds are located, including Sydney Harbour National Park, Lane Cove National Park, North Sydney Oval and Chatswood Oval.

The famous Parramatta River is also part of this region. The Upper North Shore is a region known for its affluent and leafy neighbourhoods. The Upper North Shore relates to the suburbs located between Chatswood and Hornsby. The Bankwest Quality of Life Index deemed the Ku-ring-gai council, which is one of the Upper North Shore's councils, the number one Australian Local Government Area for standard of living.
